When it comes to private health insurance, Dependants are a crucial part of family policies. Whether you’re welcoming a new baby, adding a stepchild, or preparing your adult children for their own cover, knowing how to manage Dependants is key. This article will help you understand who qualifies as a Dependant, how to add them to your policy, and what options are available as they grow older.
Here at Navy Health, we define a Dependant as either a natural child, legally adopted child, foster child or stepchild, who is unmarried and under the age of 22. However, there are cases where Dependants can stay covered on your family policy beyond this age.
For example, Dependants who are full-time students can remain on the family policy until they turn 31, provided they are not married or in a de facto relationship and are studying in an approved course at an Australian school, college, or university.
At Navy Health, we are proud to support everyone connected to Defence by simplifying private health insurance and ensuring it meets your needs. One way we do this is by allowing Dependants to be covered under a Couples’ policy at no additional cost.
If you have a Dependant and you would like them to be covered under your policy, it’s important to reach out to us as soon as possible. Delaying this process could mean your Dependant may need to serve waiting periods. Waiting periods are a set period of time when certain claims cannot be made, typically ranging from 2 to 12 months, depending on the service. It would be best to add you Dependant to your policy as soon as possible to avoid any waits.
Thankfully, adding a new Dependant, such as a newborn, foster child, or adopted child is straightforward. When adding Dependants, it’s important to note that waiting periods may apply, unless they have held previous cover with another fund. Even then, depending on their previous level of cover they may still incur waiting periods for new services. The easiest and best way to understand what will apply to your circumstances is to ask our friendly Member Services team.
If you wish to add a new Dependant that is either a foster child or stepchild, you will need to provide at least one supporting document that proves guardianship. This can include a conformation from Centrelink, a Will granting you care, a court order, statutory declaration or a letter from the foster association or any other document that states the date that the Dependant has come into your care.
If you’re expecting, we encourage you to pre-emptively add your child to your policy by providing an expected due date. Once your baby is born, simply update their date of birth with us and they won’t have to serve any waiting periods.

Private health insurance can cater to a variety of health needs for children and young adults. When adding Dependants, it’s important to carefully consider what level of cover you currently have, to ensure you’re on the right level for you and your Dependant’s needs.
For example, families with younger children often prioritise cover for orthodontics, such as braces, which requires at least our Healthy Living Extras level of cover. Similarly, if your child participates in many sports or other potentially risky activities, you may want to consider our Premium Extras level of cover to ensure school-related injuries are included. If poor eyesight runs in your family, it’s also worth exploring a higher level of optical cover to better address future needs. You can compare Extras cover options by visiting our website here.

Dependants studying overseas temporarily can remain on your policy at no extra cost if they meet the age requirements. While they won’t be able to claim overseas treatments, this ensures they’ll be able to use their private health insurance when vising or returning home as well as having uninterrupted cover, avoiding waiting periods for reactivation.

When a Dependant nears 22, we will contact you to discuss their options. If your Dependant is studying full-time at an Australian education facility, you simply need to submit a student declaration form and they can stay on your membership for another year. Each year you will need to submit another form to reconfirm they are still studying, and you can continue to do this process up until your Dependant is 31 years of age. This process is simple and will be explained in the email sent by Navy Health. However, non-students have a few options they may wish to consider.
As Dependants grow older, transitioning to their own health insurance is an important step. Here at Navy Health, we offer an excellent intermediate option called a Young Adult Membership (YAM) for Dependants who are turning 22 and are not studying. YAM memberships allow Dependants to remain on their parents’ Hospital cover while taking out their own Extras cover. It’s a helpful stepping stone toward full independence and allows them to stay under your Hospital cover until the age of 27. However, there are a few extra criteria they need to meet to be eligible.
