What is a Young Adult Membership?
A Young Adult Membership allows you to take the first step on your journey towards independent health cover. This membership allows you to remain on your parent’s Hospital cover provided you take out your own Extras cover. To be eligible for a Young Adult Membership you must meet the following criteria:
- Aged over 22 but under 27
- Not currently studying full-time
- Unmarried and not in a de facto relationship
- Your parents' membership is still current
What is Extras cover and why would I need it?
There may be unexpected health expenses that could add up over time. That’s where Extras cover steps in – your go-to for claiming back some cash on things Medicare doesn’t cover.
Extras health insurance, also known as Ancillary Cover, allows you to claim back some of the costs of your regular out-of-hospital health care services and treatments. Think physiotherapy, dental checkups, optical needs, and more.

How do I apply?
Application Deadline
Submit your application form to Navy Health within 30 days of becoming ineligible under your family’s membership. Ensure the new membership starts from the day you are no longer fully covered by your parents health plan.
Failure to act will result in removal from your parents’ cover, leaving you no longer insured.

What if I'm not eligible?
Don’t meet the criteria?
Unfortunately, if you don’t meet all the criteria above then you do not qualify for a Young Adult Membership. This means you will need to take out your own cover with Navy Health. In this case, explore our various cover options to find the one that may best suit your needs.
Studying full-time?
If you’re a full-time student at an Australian tertiary institution, you remain on your family’s health plan for both Hospital and Extras. Just complete the Student Declaration form to maintain your coverage. You can continue to be covered up until any of the following occur – you turn 31 years of age; you stop studying full-time, you enter a de factor relationship; or you get married. From this point you will need to take out your own independent health cover.
