Life can be unpredictable and it can be common to face situations that are out of your control. An unknown situation can be emotional and challenging to navigate, as we often want security and to know what will happen in the future.
However having a positive mindset and acknowledging that life can be unpredictable can help you work through uncertain times. Here are some tips to help you through an uncertain situation.
Control what you can
It can be common to experience anxiety when you encounter a situation that is out of your control. Focusing on what you can control instead, such as reaching out for support and maintaining a positive perspective, can have a healthy effect on your health and wellbeing.
Acceptance
It’s normal to experience uncertainty in life. This can result in feeling insecure, powerless and unmotivated. You may even experience moments when you try to control the situation in an unhealthy way. Learning to accept your circumstance can help you develop a positive perspective and to create a plan forward.
Practice mindfulness
Mindfulness is about being present in the moment and being aware of what you’re feeling and observing. A study has shown that practicing mindfulness can help people that suffer from anxiety when they are presented with an unknown situation.1 A great way to practice mindfulness is through meditation. Guided meditation mobile apps can be a great resource to help you on your journey.
Seek support
Your family or friends are a great source of emotional support and can provide a different perspective when you’re going through an unknown situation. Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS) are also available and can be contacted on 1800 624 608. DMFS support Defence members with their service and family life. Reaching out to your support network will help you receive the support you need during a difficult time.
