Going to Hospital

Going to hospital can be confusing. Navy Health understands this and wants to ensure going to hospital is not a daunting or stressful experience.  It can be a time of uncertainty for not only yourself, but your loved ones as well.

At Navy Health, we want to do more than just “pay the bills” when you are facing the prospect of going to hospital.  Our Member Services team are here to help you with the pre and post admission procedures, offer advice and ensure that you have all of the information you need to make your hospital stay as stress-free as possible.  Navy Health’s Member Services team will be with you every step of the way.  Here are  a few tips to remember:

Seeing your Specialist
When consulting with your General Practitioner and Specialist, remember to ask about what out-of-pocket expenses you can expect to be responsible for.
Out-of-pocket expenses
Doctors have an obligation to provide their patients with what is known as “Informed Financial Consent” which clearly outlines their proposed charges and what additional expenses you may incur.
Access Gap
Remember to ask whether or not your Specialist participates in Navy Health’s Access Gap Scheme, which may help reduce your overall out of pocket expenses.  Refer to our section on the website on Access Gap for further information.
Call Navy Health
As soon as you are aware that you will need to go to hospital, please  contact our Member Services Team on 1300 306 289.  It is important that you are fully armed with all the pieces of information that you need prior to admission, and our staff can guide you through the process.
Questions to ask Navy Health
Am I covered for this procedure or treatment? Have I served all the relevant waiting periods? Will I have an excess to pay? Can you please explain how the Access Gap Scheme works? Can you please confirm that the facility that I am booked in to is a Navy Health Agreement Hospital?
Other costs
Whilst our Premium Hospital and Healthy Hospital 200 & 500 plans will cover most of the cost of your hospital stay, such as your accommodation and theatre costs, there may be additional costs that are not covered by your insurance, such as discharge pharmacy items, some pathology and medical tests, specialist appointments prior to and post your admission, charges above the Medicare Benefits Schedule.
Saver Plus cover Please be aware that Saver Plus hospital cover has services that are not covered at all and some services that are only covered in a Public Hospital. Find out more.
Basic Plus cover
If you are on our Basic Hospital Plus plan, it is important to note that if you are admitted overnight in a Private Facility, only limited benefits will apply. You are however, covered if you are admitted overnight in a Public Hospital.
